Volleyball Study Guide
·
Volleyball was
created by an instructor at a Massachusetts YMCA named William Morgan in 1895
·
When volleyball
was first created in was called “mintonette”
It was changed shortly later to volleyball.
·
Morgan created it
for businessman to play at lunch or on break because he was looking for
something less demanding than basketball.
·
Forearms pass
(bump) cues:
ü Lock your elbows to make a flat platform
ü Contact the ball with both arms at the same time
ü Shrug your shoulders and straighten your knees
ü Do not swing your arms!
·
Overhead pass
(set) cues:
ü Get in ready position
ü Make your hands in the shape of the ball
ü Extend legs, arms, and wrist towards the target.
ü Sets should be at least 8-12 ft. high
·
1930, the first two-man beach game was played.
·
Underhand serve
cues
ü Square your hips and shoulders to your target.
ü Hold the ball with non-serving palm at the side of
your hip.
ü Bring arm back at 4 oclock, then swing arm forward
ü Strike ball with your heel of your palm with and open
hand. Follow through
·
Traditional
indoor volleyball is played with 6 on a team
·
No more than 3
hits per side.
·
Players can not
hit the ball 2 times in a row.
·
No players can
touch the net at any time.
·
Left corner
position is the server and remands the server until there is a SIDEOUT.
·
SIDEOUT is a change in servers and a rotation.

Basketball unit test study guide

Basketball
Study Guide
History- Invented in 1891 by Dr. James
Naismith, a Canadian Physical Education teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts.
First baskets were
made of peach baskets- Giving “basketball” its name
Dribbling Cues
ü Use finger pads
ü Ball should be waist high or lower
ü Keep your head up
ü Dribble under control
Passing Cues
2 types: bounce pass/ chest pass
ü Step towards your target
ü Extend your arms out, locking out
your elbows
ü Snap the wrist, thumbs facing down
ü Only pass to a looking player
Traveling- is a violation of the rules
that occurs when a player holding the ball moves his or her pivot foot or
taking two or more steps without dribbling the ball.
Double dribble- occurs when a player stops
dribbling the ball and starts dribbling again or when a player dribbles with
two hands simultaneously.
Lay-up - a two-point shot
attempt made by leaping from below, laying the ball up near the basket using one hand.
Rebound - the act of
successfully gaining possession of the basketball after a missed field goal or
free throw.

Personal
foul-
a breach of the rules that concerns illegal personal contact with an opponent that doesn’t

It is the most
common type of foul in basketball.
A player is
only allowed 5 personal fouls
per game. Players can’t play after the 5th personal foul.
Offense- the team with possession of the ball
trying to score on the opponent’s basket.
Defense- the team without possession of the
ball, defends the offense from scoring on their basket.

Moving in open

Pivot- to keep one foot in place while holding the ball and
moving the other foot one step in any direction.
