Volleyball Study Guide


·         Volleyball was created by an instructor at a Massachusetts YMCA named William Morgan in 1895

·         When volleyball was first created in was called “mintonette” It was changed shortly later to volleyball.

·         Morgan created it for businessman to play at lunch or on break because he was looking for something less demanding than basketball.

·         Forearms pass (bump) cues:
ü  Lock your elbows to make a flat platform
ü  Contact the ball with both arms at the same time
ü  Shrug your shoulders and straighten your knees
ü  Do not swing your arms!

·         Overhead pass (set) cues:
ü  Get in ready position
ü  Make your hands in the shape of the ball
ü  Extend legs, arms, and wrist towards the target.
ü  Sets should be at least 8-12 ft. high

·         1930, the first two-man beach game was played.

·         Underhand serve cues

ü  Square your hips and shoulders to your target.
ü  Hold the ball with non-serving palm at the side of your hip.
ü  Bring arm back at 4 oclock, then swing arm forward
ü  Strike ball with your heel of your palm with and open hand. Follow through


·         Traditional indoor volleyball is played with 6 on a team

·         No more than 3 hits per side.

·         Players can not hit the ball 2 times in a row.

·         No players can touch the net at any time.

·         Left corner position is the server and remands the server until there is a SIDEOUT.

·         SIDEOUT is a change in servers and a rotation.

Basketball Study Guide

History- Invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian Physical Education teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts.

First baskets were made of peach baskets- Giving “basketball” its name

Dribbling Cues
ü  Use finger pads
ü  Ball should be waist high or lower
ü  Keep your head up
ü  Dribble under control

Passing Cues
2 types: bounce pass/ chest pass
ü  Step towards your target
ü  Extend your arms out, locking  out     your elbows
ü  Snap the wrist, thumbs facing down
ü  Only pass to a looking player

Traveling- is a violation of the rules that occurs when a player holding the ball moves his or her pivot foot or taking two or more steps without dribbling the ball.

Double dribble- occurs when a player stops dribbling the ball and starts dribbling again or when a player dribbles with two hands simultaneously.

Lay-up - a two-point shot attempt made by leaping from below, laying the ball up near the basket using one hand.

Rebound - the act of successfully gaining possession of the basketball after a missed field goal or free throw.

Modified, JV, Varsity Basketball- 5 fouls.

Bounce Pass/ Chest Pass-
hands on the side of the ball-thumbs up
step toward your target
snap wrist, lock elbows up, thumbs down

Layup
Eyes on the rim
Jump off opposite foot of shooting hand
Raise same hand same knee
Gentle touch off the backboard. 

Personal foul- a breach of the rules that concerns illegal personal contact with an opponent that doesn’t allow the player to make a legal basketball move.

It is the most common type of foul in basketball.

A player is only allowed 5 personal fouls per game. Players can’t play after the 5th personal foul.

Offense- the team with possession of the ball trying to score on the opponent’s basket.

Defense- the team without possession of the ball, defends the offense from scoring on their basket.

ü  Moving in open space to get open

ü  Pivot-   to keep one foot in place while holding the ball and moving the other foot one step in any direction.

Defenses:
Zone- guarding an area on the court
Man to Man- guarding a specific player on the court

All of our 3rd graders traveled to Kleinhans for the Healthy Zone game show! 43 won and will continue to the next round!!

Math integration in PE

Card Shark was the name of the game. Students used cards to either use a bounce pass or chest pass, then they added up all their points!

Test Dates

6th Grade- Friday, 10/30
5th, 7th, 8th- Thursday, 1029


HANDBALL Study Guide

Combination of 4 sports:
                                BASKETBALL, SOCCER, HOCKEY, WATER POLO

Olympic Team Handball: 3 seconds to pass or shoot the ball
                                                14 total players on the court at once

School 43 Team Handball: 5 seconds to pass or shoot the ball
A defender can be an arm’s length away from a player with the ball.

Defensive strategies used: 
                                Man to Man
                                Zone defense
Two primary muscle groups used when throwing a ball:

Push-ups improve the muscular strength in your deltoid & triceps

The goalie is the only player that can be in the goal crease.

                                                YELLOW Card =2 minute penalty

We started a Donors Choose page and within 4 days our project was fully funded!  Check out our students using the foam lollipop paddles on Fun Fitness Friday!  They are great for striking skills, eye hand coordination, and also a great pre-req for racket games.
