Basketball Study Guide

History- Invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian Physical Education teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts.

First baskets were made of peach baskets- Giving “basketball” its name

Dribbling Cues
ü  Use finger pads
ü  Ball should be waist high or lower
ü  Keep your head up
ü  Dribble under control

Passing Cues
2 types: bounce pass/ chest pass
ü  Step towards your target
ü  Extend your arms out, locking  out     your elbows
ü  Snap the wrist, thumbs facing down
ü  Only pass to a looking player

Traveling- is a violation of the rules that occurs when a player holding the ball moves his or her pivot foot or taking two or more steps without dribbling the ball.

Double dribble- occurs when a player stops dribbling the ball and starts dribbling again or when a player dribbles with two hands simultaneously.

Lay-up - a two-point shot attempt made by leaping from below, laying the ball up near the basket using one hand.

Rebound - the act of successfully gaining possession of the basketball after a missed field goal or free throw.

Modified, JV, Varsity Basketball- 5 fouls.

Bounce Pass/ Chest Pass-
hands on the side of the ball-thumbs up
step toward your target
snap wrist, lock elbows up, thumbs down

Layup
Eyes on the rim
Jump off opposite foot of shooting hand
Raise same hand same knee
Gentle touch off the backboard. 

Personal foul- a breach of the rules that concerns illegal personal contact with an opponent that doesn’t allow the player to make a legal basketball move.

It is the most common type of foul in basketball.

A player is only allowed 5 personal fouls per game. Players can’t play after the 5th personal foul.

Offense- the team with possession of the ball trying to score on the opponent’s basket.

Defense- the team without possession of the ball, defends the offense from scoring on their basket.

ü  Moving in open space to get open

ü  Pivot-   to keep one foot in place while holding the ball and moving the other foot one step in any direction.

Defenses:
Zone- guarding an area on the court
Man to Man- guarding a specific player on the court
